PARC's Systems Sciences Lab (SSL) is seeking an applied research scientist in the field of model-based engineering to join a team of researchers developing innovative system health solutions. The focus area is physics-based modeling of complex, interconnected cyber-physical systems that can be applied as readily to design exploration and analysis as to run-time diagnosis and prognosis. Applications include computer-aided engineering tool development, design stage fault analysis, and model-aided system health management. We are also looking for experience that aligns with our broader vision of developing increasingly autonomous and self-aware connected electromechanical devices/systems.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can communicate with customers (both in the government and industry), formalize requirements, define and refine application concepts, and take ideas from the drawing board to prototype deployment. This is an applied research position: we are seeking candidates interested in delivering results that will make real impact upon the deficiencies in the engineering processes of today.

Responsibilities

- Work with stakeholders to understand customer needs, and applications for component and system models
- Design, develop, and deliver innovative modeling strategies (representation, abstraction, and approximation) that can be applied to multiple usage scenarios
- Develop S/W and/or H/W test-benches to verify and validate model behavior
- Design and deliver model-based design and analysis tools
- Lead/contribute to efforts on engaging new customers and developing new business opportunities, including proposal development

Requirements

- Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, System Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related fields
- At least five years of experience in physics modeling of cyber-physical systems
- Experience with fault modeling, physics-of-failure, and model-based diagnostics and prognostics
- Experience with Modelica and/or related system modeling tools
- Strong presentation and written communication skills
- Hands-on software and algorithm development
- Commitment to developing quality software

Desired Experience

- Experience with systems health management applications
- Experience with predictive analytics applications
- Leadership skills and experience managing research efforts or teams
- Previous experience in an applied R&D setting working with other Ph.D.-level research scientists
- Track record in raising research & development funding
- Demonstrated business development skills
