The Mechanical Engineering Department in the A. J. Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, is seeking applications for Assistant Research Scientists with specialization in prognostics and health management (PHM). The position is with the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) within the ME department.

Duties: The selected candidate will work in a team setting with graduate students, staff, research scientists and professors associated with CALCE. The selected candidate will be responsible for initiating new research programs, bringing in research funding from government and industry and achieving the goals of ongoing research projects in PHM. Specific duties and responsibilities of the position include: (1) initiating research programs; (2) proposal preparation; (3) generating research funding; (4) managing research projects, including reporting functions and sponsor relations; (5) developing effective working relationships with national and international government and industrial organizations; (6) promoting and representing the ME department and CALCE at professional events; (7) monitoring progress on research projects and ensuring their quality and timely completion; (8) managing and mentoring graduate students; and (9) publishing in high quality journals. This is a non-tenure track position.

Qualifications: Candidates should have an earned doctorate in aerospace/ mechanical/ electrical engineering or mathematics at the time of the appointment. Beneficial areas of expertise include: Algorithm development for fault detection, fault isolation, diagnostics and prognostics, Complex system modeling, Data-driven prognostics, Diagnosis methods, Fault-adaptive controls, Model-based prognostics, Physics of failure, PHM for electronics, PHM system design, PHM technology maturation, Sensors , Signal processing , Software health management, Structural health management, or System reliability.
The right candidate will have a strong record of innovation with a demonstrated track record in generation of research funding and high quality publications. Good teamwork and excellent communication skills with a focus on writing and presenting technical material are essential to the position. The selected candidate should be able to motivate and work with M.S. and Ph.D. students on their academic research, and help them improve their research writing and presentation skills. The person should be creative and have innovative ideas to maintain high quality in the center. Candidates should have, or must have shown, a high potential for both teaching and research excellence.
