    Corinne Pohlmann cited ways Canadian standards development organizations can reduce red tape for SMEs:

    Dealing with government regulations and paper burden is a significant issue for the CFIB’s members, said Corinne Pohlmann. When trading with the European Union (EU), she added, a key reason why many small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) no longer buy or sell goods and/or services to that region is having to deal with different rules and standards in each EU country.

    Regularly review the need for existing and new standards and their impact on SMEs.
    Stay flexible and provide basic examples for what constitutes compliance with standards, where it makes sense.
    If possible, focus on outcomes, and avoid being too prescriptive when developing standards.”
